It was a rather warm day and I should have left the engine running as I was using fuel with ethanol at the time. I turned the electric pump off as it was not needed once the engine started.Īfter driving for a couple of hours I stopped for fuel. On the morning we left I used the electric fuel pump to charge my carburetor float bowl and the engine fired immediately.

I never switched it back to the 143 but since it is a heat related issue it makes sense and may be worth a try if it applies.Recently, Carol and I drove our Classic Packard to an Ohio Region Mini Caravan hosted by David Johnson. I did that for heat in the boat for cold Seattle mornings. Once we had it, we always just had to wait it out for the engine to cool before it would start.Īnd last- I was told once that it could have to do with switching out my 143 thermostat to 160. We used to get it at random times, maybe 10 times a season since I started making sure to leave that gap in time I have not had it happen once in over 10 years now.Īlso, this doesn't work once you have the vapor lock. Since we came up with that, we have never had the issue again. And we noticed a pattern: that on that start I did not give that pause between turning the key on (fuel pump on) and hitting the starter. Now I have not proven this theory but anytime I got the vapor lock and could not start for about an hour letting everything cool down, I had a lot of time to think about it. Especially when the engine is hot, after sitting for a while. I found that if I ALWAYS turn the key on and let the fuel pressure build until the pump stops, then wait an extra couple seconds, then start, it starts every time. I used to have a problem with this but cured it like this:īTW I do not have the LT1, but i did have a lot of vapor lock issues. Its possible return line flow to tank to slow and causing pressure/flow drop, resulting in fuel gas in line causing a vapor lock. I pulled my return line up in my tank and have better how weather performance and consistency. pinch of fuel supply,/or returns line and if pressure goes up regular bad. cant remember know, but posted on forum here. I cant remember but there's a way to check pressure regularator. The 15 psi is on pressure which causes the fuel to boil, leading to vapor lock. My final decision was to keep tank topped off. Even in tank fuel pumps suffer when levels drop to 1/3 1/4 levels. Was thinking of adding a helper pump in fuel tank, but these tanks no baffles. I tried adding a fuel/water separator but that killed my flow. The sipphon portion of the fuel system works best when tank is full. Below a half a tank pressure was good but flow was reduced.

I do not have any fuel leaking out of the vacuum end of the regulator.I changed mine and learned alot along the way. I have been looking at the regulator too, when I pull the vacuum hose the pressure rises a bit. Thanks Mike- any way to check them, or should they just be replaced? When looking into the ends I see no delamination or bubbles but that is obviously a very small snapshot. Something is obviously wrong and I am looking for advise on where to go next to try to solve it. I have owned the boat for 7 years and never had a vapor lock problem. Because these are the highest point on the rail I am wondering if I have a vapor pocket making them run leaner? I also seem to be getting a lean condition on the front 4 cylinders (1,3,2,4) based on the spark plugs. I was able to bleed off a substantial amount of fuel vapor from the rail and then was able to build pressure and start fine. I only had 15 PSI max and could not build any more pressure (happened twice in the same day). I was finally able to capture the phenomenon with my fuel pressure gauge attached when it happened. When the boat sits after running and is restarted after heat soak, it starts fine and the stumbles, dies and will not restart. Decided to start a new thread as I was initially chasing what I thought was a sensor.ĩ4 Prostar 190 with LT1- Long story short my boat runs great but the end of last season and all of this season I have been fighting vapor lock.
